The 20-year-old rapper Pop Smoke was killed in a Hollywood Hills home early Wednesday. It is being reported that multiple people invaded the home and eventually opened fire. The Los Angeles Police Department responded to this incident after a 911 call from the East Coast informed them that people were breaking into their friend’s house and one of them was armed, said LAPD Capt. Steve Lurie.

When authorities entered the home they found a man who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. He was quickly taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where a few hours later he was pronounced dead. Officers held and released people that were in the house. By the time the police had arrived a few suspects had already left the scene.

It was first reported at around 6:30 in the morning that the victim was, unfortunately, Bashar Barakah Jackson known professionally as Pop Smoke.

He was an up-and-coming rap artist who was part of the drill music scene in Brooklyn. He got his big break in the summer of 2019 with his hit song “Welcome to the Party” as well as his debut mixtape “Meet the Woo”. This song was also remixed with Nicki Minaj. Other successful songs of his include “GATTI” with Travis Scott and Dior.  He recently released his second mixtape “Meet the Woo v2” on February 7th.

Many celebrities have reacted to the news of the young rapper’s death. Nicki Minaj wrote, “the Bible tells us that jealousy is as cruel as the grave. Unbelievable. Rest In Peace, Pop.”

50 cent shared a photo of them both with a caption “no such thing as success without jealousy, treachery comes from those who are close. R.i.P.” Both of these statements echo the theory that Pop Smoke was targeted because of the things that he had.

He was set to go on the “Meet the Woo” Tour in the month of March and was set to perform at the Rolling Loud hip-hop music festival in May.

Numerous Blanche Ely students have expressed their shock and utter disbelief of his death especially after another death that largely impacted the culture.

Although no arrests have been made in connection to this crime, investigators are working diligently to find information to help solve this case. Since this is a new story, information is still developing.
