Social Distancing Sparking Peoples Creativity

Fierra Philogene

As events are canceled, non-essential businesses close, and stay at home orders are mandated people have been bored. This, in turn, has led to a surge of creativity on the internet from everyone, including celebrities, to find some normalcy and more importantly entertainment during these times.

For most musicians going to different events and performing is a large part of their careers. This has unfortunately been put on hold due to COVID-19 so they have no choice but to find alternative ways to interact with and entertain their fans (and to kill their own boredom).

Instagram Live has given people the opportunity to show others on social media what they are doing in real-time as well as giving the participants of the live an opportunity to comment and join the live at the hosts’ discretion.

Artists like John Legend, Alessia Cara, Miley Cyrus, Tori Kelly, and many more have hopped on their Instagram lives to perform quarantine concerts, sometimes collaborating with one another. H.E.R is set to perform weekly on Instagram live at 8:00 p.m in a series called “Girls With Guitars” where she will perform songs with her many guitars. She will also engage in conversation with other female celebrity guitarists.

Other than concerts people are using this medium as a place to battle. Some of the industries’ best artists, producers, songwriters, and DJs have gone toe to toe to see whose body of work really reigns supreme. Some battles that have already taken place include Ne-Yo vs. Johnta Austin and  Swizz Beatz vs. Timbaland.

Ne-Yo and Austin both very talented songwriters battled it out on Insta Live going song for song with each of their top picks. Some of the hits that Ne-Yo helped to bring us include Irreplaceable by Beyonce, Spotlight by Jennifer Hudson, and Take a Bow by Rihanna. Austin came out swinging with We Belong Together by Mariah Carey, Be Without You by Mary J Blige, and With You by Chris Brown.

There has been a surplus of challenges and fast reactions to anything going on on social media because there has been fewer things to do. This has brung major added popularity to the app Tik-Tok over the last month. Tik Tok is a Chinese video-sharing social networking service. It is used to create short dance, lip-sync, comedy, and talent videos.

Some of the popular challenges that people have been doing include the Out West Dance Challenge with the song OUT WEST by JACK BOYS and Travis Scott. The Savage Dance Challenge with the song Savage by Megan Thee Stallion. Also the Something New Dance Challenge with the song title of the same name by Wiz Khalifa and Ty Dolla Sign. These challenges and more have been popular among families as quarantining has kept us in the house with one another providing a lot of bonding time.

These times have stopped many people from doing their jobs but for creatives’ this gives them time to benefit from this situation. They have the internet at their disposal and its open 24 hours.
