Lady Tigers 2020 State Champions

The girls basketball team at Blanche Ely High School have won the state championship game on Saturday, February29th. The Tigers took on Wekiva High School in the state championship game which took place in Lakeland, Florida. In 1992 the tigers won their second state title and since then they haven’t won again until this year. The Tigers was behind Wekiva 11 points going into the half. Towards the end of the game the tigers made a tremendous comeback. The Tigers took the win over Wekiva with the score being 51 to 46. 

The Lady Tigers has had an amazing season this year. They only lost 6 games and it was from teams out of state. The Tigers were undefeated in broward county. They beat their rivalry school Dillard three times this season one in regular season, again in the big 8 and lastly in regionals. The Tigers also won the big 8 for the first since the big 8 been around 28 years ago. They also beat St Thomas another school that beat them a crushing four times last year. The Tigers also beat them in the regular season, Big 8 and in regionals. The Lady Tigers knew they had to stay focused and disciplined to keep making history in the school.

Before the girls went to states that wednesday they had a prep rally to give them all the support they needed. At the first game they played at States there weren’t as many fans there because it was on a weekday. On that saturday, the championship game the stands were filled with Ely fans. They all drove up there that Saturday morning to catch the game. The Tigers said “ We have to give our fans a show, they didn’t come all the way from Pompano to watch us lose.” They took that and ran with it & became the 2020 State Champs.
